A description of the process with linocut printing.

What is Lino print art?

Linocut, also known as lino print, lino printing or linoleum art, is a printmaking technique, a variant of woodcut in which a sheet of linoleum (sometimes mounted on a wooden block) is used for a relief surface.

A design is cut into the linoleum surface with a sharp knife, V-shaped chisel or gouge, with the raised (uncarved) areas representing a reversal (mirror image) of the parts to show printed.

The linoleum sheet is inked with a roller (called a brayer), and then impressed onto paper or fabric.

The actual printing can be done by hand or with a printing press. I love the challenge of printing by hand, this also ensures each print is unique

The Magic of Lino Printing

Lino printing is a truly magical art form with a rich history dating back centuries. It's a tactile and rewarding process that allows you to transform a simple block of linoleum into a unique and expressive artwork.

The feeling of carving into the lino is incredibly satisfying. Each stroke of the tool removes material, revealing the design beneath. It's a meditative process, allowing you to focus on the present moment and connect with your creativity. The anticipation of the first print is thrilling. Will it turn out as you envisioned? The excitement of seeing your design transferred to paper is unmatched.

But the joy of lino printing extends beyond the creation process. Sharing your artwork with others brings immense satisfaction. Seeing the delight on someone's face as they admire your print, knowing that you've brought a piece of your creativity into their home, is truly rewarding.

Lino printing is a journey of discovery, a blend of skill and intuition. It's a way to connect with your inner artist, express your unique vision, and share the beauty of handmade art with the world.
